Bottlenose Dolphin Genus Infographic
The bottlenose dolphin used to be considered one species, but DNA testing discovered that there were two species and the recent discovery in 2011 of a third species defined the current structure of the genus Tursiops. The common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops aduncus) and the Burrunan dolphin (Tursiops australis) are the three species of this genus. The most widespread species and with the largest population is the common bottlenose, which reaches around 600,000 individual according to estimations. Tursiops aduncus probably reaches 6000-8000 specimens while the Burrunan dolphin 150 members at most.
